A CROSSING IN
TIME, BETWEEN THE
STREET AND THE
GARDEN

Located in Príncipe Real, in the parish of Misericrdia (former parish of Mercês), the residential building on Rua do Jasmim, no 11, included in the Municipal Inventory of Lisbon’s heritage, corresponds to an old noble or palatial house. It was originally built by the knight Caetano Alberto Ferreira (1763), businessman professed in the Order of Christ (1768) and deputy of the Junta do Comércio, an organization that, by order of the Marquis of Pombal, helped finance the reconstruction of the city of Lisbon, following the Great Earthquake of November 1, 1755.

CULTURAL
REFLECTIONS

There are two houses in Lisbon with pineapple tiles, one in Belem, with the fruit looking upwards, and one in Rua do Jasmim, with the pineapple inverted.

The builders, travellers & merchants from the 16th century, came back from Brazil and built a house with an inverted pineapple as an homage to a great business relationship with Brazil.
